Women's Studies in Religion

Our Patron:
Margo Goldsmith

Margo L. Goldsmith, the founding patron of the Women's Studies in Religion Program, has been instrumental in launching the program, which began in 1990. She generously supports two chairs in WSR and contributes to several scholarships for WSR students. Margo's vision in supporting a graduate program in women's studies in religion was to "provide for the development of women scholars and educators in religion where perspectives relating to the roles, status, image and ethical concerns of women can be clearly articulated and nurtured."

After a semi-retirement from real estate management, Margo turned to philanthropy. She was a founding patron for the SAFE program (Stop Abusive Family Environments) for battered women at the School of Psychology of Fuller Theological Seminary. Margo returned to school in 1978 to earn her MFCC (marriage, family and children counseling) degree from Azusa Pacific University in 1980. She drew on her training as a therapist during the years she supported the SAFE program. In 1986 she received an honorary doctorate in humane letters from the California Christian Institute (now Trinity College of Graduate Studies) in recognition for her contribution.

Margo has been actively involved with the WSR program as it has developed, serving on the Advisory Committee. She continues to be a lively presence at many of the WSR events. "This is the return on my investment," she often says, "seeing these young women blossom as feminists and scholars."
